Chimneys should to be cleaned frequently.  The fuel burning and how often the appliance is being used will determine the how often.  Wood can produce large amounts of creosote when burned in a stove or insert.  Pellet produces a very fine ash.  Gas and oil type appliances need some cleaning.  Visually inspect chimney flues on a yearly basis for material defects (i.e. cracks in the clay liner, metal warping with no solid connection to adjoining pipe) and cleanliness.  Homeowners can clean their own chimney.  Select a brush that will fit the size each flue being used in order to clean properly.  Wire brushes work well on masonry chimneys while poly brushes work well on metal chimneys.  Rods are either 4’ or 6’ long and can be attached to each other.  Be sure to select a quantity of rods which is taller than the height of your chimney to ensure proper cleaning.
